Let the cross-Canada road trips begin, the Trans-Canada Supercharger network now officially open

It’s a Christmas miracle. Tesla and Elon Musk have long been promising a cross-Canada Supercharger network for years. Many locations have sat idle, while others have had construction complete for months, only to sit and wait for the switch to be turned on. Well it all happened last week in one fell swoop, as Tesla turned on over 20 new Tesla Superchargers across Canada.

With locations from Wawa, Ontario to Bassano, Alberta, the Supercharger map across Canada looks a lot different today than it did just a few days ago. While much of the east and west coast was covered, there was a large gap in central Canada, which thanks to the efforts of the Tesla Supercharger team, is no longer.

With the opening of so many Superchargers to complete the coast-to-coast network, you can now easily drive your Tesla from Victoria, on Vancouver Island on the west coast, all the way to Halifax, Scotia on the east coast.

The mass opening was celebrated in different ways. For those in Regina, Saskatchewan, there was an official ribbon melting ceremony, complete with a ‘not a flamethrower’ on hand instead of the usual scissors to mark the occasion.

Then there were the more remote locations, like Upsala, Ontario, which quietly turned on without any fanfare at all.

Most of the new locations that opened across Canada feature Tesla’s latest V3 Superchargers. These are capable of charging at up to 250kW, ot 1,600km/hr. That means a Long Range (LR) Model 3 owner can regain about 120km of charge in just 5 minutes.

These kinds of charging speeds are not only going to make long-distance travel that much easier in a Tesla, but it’s also going to increase the turn-over rate at Supercharger stations, resulting in more cars being able to cycle through, meaning less chance of having to wait for an open stall.

The opening of the cross-Canada Supercharger network follows the official opening of the ‘Electric Highway’ across Canada by Petro-Canada just a few days ago. If you have a CHAdeMO adapter, your road-trip is going to be that much better.
