BC Hydro launches EV vs gas car cost calculator

2 min read
EV vs gas

Last week we told you about Electric Vehicle Association of Alberta (EVAA) and their EV comparison tool that shows you how much money you can save by going electric. Now BC Hydro has released their own tool, an EV vs Gas Cost Calculator.

The BC Hydro tool works a bit differently than the EVAA tool. First, you select the type of vehicle you’re considering purchasing – compact, mid-size, or SUV. Then you select your budget range, from under $40,000 to over $60,000, then it displays a selection of EVs available based on the options you selected.

Once you’ve selected your desired vehicle, you can enter in your daily driving distance, and the tool then calculates how much you can save on an annual basis by switching to your desired EV. The tool outlines some random stats like charging time and a real-world example of how far you can go on a single charge. Also included are what rebates and incentives are available based on the vehicle you selected.

The strange thing about this tool is that the only mid-size Tesla option provided is the Standard Range model, capable of just 150km on a full charge. It does not include the much better option of the Standard Range Plus, which can go 386km on a full charge, but is still in their mid-range budget of under $60,000. The Tesla Model S and X are also available for the mid-size and SUV options over $60,000.

You can use this tool and find out more information about switching to an EV on the BC Hydro website.
