2020 Tesla Model 3 now the most efficient EV ever produced

Tesla vs Hyundai

Since the Hyundai IONIQ was released in 2016, it has held the title of most efficient electric vehicle. Hyundai was able to get an impressive 124 miles (200km) out of a not-very impressive 28kWh battery, equating to a MPGe rating of 136 miles. That was just ahead of Tesla 133 MPGe rating.

MPGe = miles per gallon of gasoline-equivalent

Now the 2020 EPA estimated ranges have been released, and Tesla has officially taken that title of most efficient EV away from Hyundai. With design changes for the 2020 Hyundai IONIQ, including an improved 38.3kWh resulting in 170 mile (274km) range, pushed the MPGe rating down to 133.

Tesla vs Hyundia efficiency

That would have matched the 2019 Tesla Model 3 SR+ with a range of 386km and a 55kWh battery. But the 2020 Model 3 SR+ has a new range which was revealed on the Tesla website in October, meaning the MPGe rating has increased to 141MPGe.

Existing SR+ owners will also receive this new range via an over-the-air (OTA) software update soon, but it’s unknown at this point if the ratings for the 2019 Model 3 will be updated to reflect this.
